In Holland, Michigan, approximately 190 miles of tubing beneath streets circulate warm water heated by waste heat from a power plant to melt snow and ice. Started in 1988, it is the largest publicly-owned snowmelt system in the U.S., keeping sidewalks and roads clear without plowing or salting.
