William McKinley wore a red carnation on his suit for good luck. In 1901, he traveled to Buffalo for the Pan-American Exposition. As he was greeting the public, he gifted his flower to a girl in the crowd, saying “I must give this flower to another little flower.” Minutes later he was shot.
